Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (June 22, 2021) – Aaron Reutzel has four days to dream about how many ways he can spend a $100,000 bonus.
Reutzel is $30,000 richer after leading the distance of the inaugural 50-lap BillionAuto.com Huset’s 50 hosted by Huset’s Speedway on Tuesday night. It was Reutzel’s third World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory of the season and came at a great time during the best-paying race of the World of Outlaws season thus far.
Equally as important, the stout performance locked Reutzel in as the lone driver who has a six-figure bonus dangling in front of him. If Reutzel wins the AGCO Jackson Nationals finale, which pays $50,000 to the winner, on Saturday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., he will receive a $100,000 bonus for a total payout of $180,000 between the two marquee events.
“We’re going to worry about celebrating tonight and then tomorrow we’ll start thinking about that bonus,” he said in Victory Lane.
Reutzel was certainly on a mission on Tuesday as he won the dash to garner the pole position for the main event. However, Donny Schatz took the top spot on the opening circuit and Reutzel was involved in an incident in turn one as the field worked to complete Lap 1. Carson Macedo dove low as Reutzel turned to block the bottom lane. The duo made contact and Macedo received the worst of it, sliding up the track and flipping into the catch fence that lines the outside of the dirt oval.
Macedo was okay and restarted the feature, which showcased a complete restart because the entire field hadn’t completed the first lap. Reutzel took advantage of the redo and quickly powered into the lead.
The second red flag of the race occurred on Lap 5 when Lynton Jeffrey and Jacob Allen collided, and the only other stoppage was on Lap 31 for the planned mid-race caution. Teams were allowed to make changes, including tires, before tackling the final 20 laps of the race.
“I started getting a bad vibration when I started running the cushion,” said Reutzel, who mentioned that his team only made a couple of minor changes during the pit stop. “We made those changes and I felt really good about the car.
“We threw something at it this weekend. I felt we were pretty good there. We didn’t make any changes all night. That makes me pretty nervous. In that open red (we changed) one or two little things I felt to make us better. It was great. It’s a really good time to find some speed. Hopefully we can keep it up. There’s a lot of money on the line the next couple of months.”
Reuzel was just as efficient during the final 20 laps, which went caution-free. Traffic allowed Schatz to close within a few tenths of a second before World of Outlaws points leader Brad Sweet slid into second place on Lap 43. Reutzel maintained an advantage of a little more than one second for the remainder of the race before winning by 1.160 seconds.
“In clean air Aaron was good,” Sweet said. “At the very end there we didn’t get enough lapped traffic. The track was in good shape. I don’t think the pit stop hurt, but I’d have liked to seen it go the whole way.
“I left it all out there. I don’t think I could have done anything different. We’ll be happy with second tonight and move on to Jackson and keep our eye on the prize.”
Schatz finished third for his second straight podium at Huset’s Speedway.
“We’ll have to accept third tonight,” he said. “The longer I went the more I was hanging on. We’ll go on to Jackson and see if we can improve on this.”
Sheldon Haudenschild placed fourth and NASCAR star Kyle Larson advanced from 11th to fifth.
Spencer Bayston and Logan Schuchart set quick time during their qualifying groups before Sweet, Reutzel, Schuchart and Macedo each won a heat race. Cory Eliason was the Last Chance Showdown winner.
Sixth-place finisher James McFadden earned a $500 bonus from Mike Brudigan Home Loans for being the overall BillionAuto.com Huset’s 50 Hard Charger.
The $200 Todd’s Beer Cave Hard Luck Award went to Macedo.
THE SHOWDOWN continues Thursday through Saturday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., for the 43rd annual AGCO Jackson Nationals. Advanced tickets, including discounted specials, are available at https://mpv.tickets.com/schedule/?agency=JKMV_PL_MPV&orgid=55369#/?view=list&includePackages=true.
